The Tomato Pole Amish Paste, 'Lycopersicon lycopersicum', is one of those old, wonderfully flavored paste tomato varieties from years past. Amish Paste has few seeds, solid flesh, and is large for a paste tomato. If you are making a tomato sauce or canning tomatoes, do not use a regular tomato! Amish Paste is the tomato to use. The Pepper Chile Ancho/Poblano, 'Capsicum annuum', is called Pablano in the fresh green form and Ancho as a dried pod. This Chile Pepper is mildly hot and is used for chilies rellenos and mole sauces. The Poblano is one of the most popular chilies in Mexico. The green Pablano is stuffed with cheese or meat for chilies rellenos and the dark, reddish-brown dried Ancho is used in a variety of sauces such as the traditional mole pablano. The Datura Angel's Trumpet, 'Datura meteloides', has fragrant and showy flowers that open late in the day to enhance the evening garden. If your time only allows you to enjoy an evening garden, then the Datua is the plant. The pale blooms will glow well into the twilight and their scent is heavenly. The Anise, 'Pimpinella anisum', was so enjoyed by the Romans, they could pay taxes with anise. The seeds and leaves are tasty and they are also useful for medicinal purposes. Anise seed has a sweet, licorice flavor and is used to intensify sweetness in cakes, pastries, and cookies. Also, either alone or combined with cinnamon or bay, compliments duck, pork, or fish. Anise prefers a protected spot because it grows spindly and is easily damaged by wind. The soil should be fairly rich and well drained.

The Cucumber Armenian Burpless, 'Cucumis satiovus', is a slicing cucumber that is slightly sweet, crisp, and never bitter. The Armenian Burpless is very long and is best harvested short at 18 inches. Cucumbers have a shallow root system and therefore require regular moisture. Do not let cucumbers get too big because the vines stop producing if over mature cucumbers stay on the vine.

The Armeria Formosa Pinkball Thrift, 'Arneria pseudarmeria ( formosa)', is like the common Sea Thrift, but bigger and it is a hardy perennial.. The Pinkball Thrift displays 1 to 2 inch round flowers in shades of pink, rose, and red. The Armeria Formosa blooms in the spring for 4 to 8 weeks. In mild climates, they can bloom all year. Plant in early spring, 2 to 4 weeks before the last average frost date, or late summer/early fall at least 2 months before the first fall frost. This Armeria is excellent as mounds in rock gardens and flower borders as well as its specialty, cut flowers.

Soak to depth of 6 to 10 inches when watering. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Prune the intermediate tomatoes in order to keep a single stem.
